Sylvain Neuvel is set to seamlessly blend history with science fiction again in 2022 with Until the Last of Me, the continuation of Mia’s journey as the Ninety Nine. Her goal? Take humanity to the stars.
Following the 2021 release of A History of What Comes Next, a first contact science fiction thriller that delves into history’s hidden secrets and conspiracy theories, placing Mia front and center, determined to make a difference in a world doomed to fail, Until the Last of Me is set to defy the odds by continuing her story rather than her daughter’s, according to the surprise announcement and cover reveal from Tordotcom Publishing made late last week (May 12).
The First Rule is the most important: “Always run, never fight.”

The official synopsis, featured below, reveals one vital clue: Mia will no longer be following the rules set out to define her existence.
The First Rule is the most important: “Always run, never fight.”
Over 100 generations, Mia’s family has shaped Earth’s history to push humanity to the stars, making brutal, wrenching choices along the way.
And now Mia finds herself about to help launch the first people into space. She can’t take them to the stars, not quite yet. But with her adversary almost upon her, and with the future of the planet at stake it’s becoming clearer that obeying the First Rule is no longer an option.
For the first time since her line’s first generation, Mia will have to choose to stand her ground, knowing that the overwhelming odds mean that she risks not only her bloodline, but also the future of the human race.
An exercise in research and discovery, A History of What Comes Next offered a stunning glimpse into the unknown, Sylvain Neuvel artfully creating a world not so far from our own, though one that is largely unfinished. Fascinating in scope, Take Them to the Stars is shaping up to be one of my favorite series: impeccable, adventurous, and ambitious. Needless to say, I’ll be pre-ordering Until the Last of Me, which is set to release with Tordotcom Publishing, in March 2022.
For now, I’ll admire the gorgeous cover by Henry Sene Yee, pictured below.
